government of india, ministry of health and family welfare, is planning establishment of new medical colleges across india. the ministry administers a centrally sponsored scheme namely, establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals with fund sharing between the central government and states in the ratio of 90:10 for ne/ special category states and 60:40 for other states. the total cost of establishment of one medical college under the scheme is rs. 1,890 million. 58 districts in 20 states/ uts have been identified under this scheme. the lists of identified states/districts are (1) 1 in the ut of andaman and nicobar: port blair, dist. south andaman (2) 1 in arunachal pradesh: at naharlagun, dist. papum pare (3) 4 in assam: at diphu (dist. karbi anglong), dist. dhubri, dist. nagaon, and at north lakhimpur (dist. lakhimpur) (4) 3 in bihar: dist. purnia, dist. samastipur, and at chhapra (dist. saran) (5) 2 in chhattisgarh: dist. rajnandgaon and at ambikapur (dist. surguja) (6) 1 in haryana: dist. bhiwani, haryana (7) 3 in himachal pradesh: dist. chamba, dist. hamirpur, and at nahan (dist. sirmaur) (8) 3 in jharkhand: dist. dumka, dist. hazaribagh and dist. palamu (9) 5 in jammu & kashmir: dist. anatnag, dist. baramulla, dist. doda, dist. kathua, dist. rajauri (10) 7 in madhya pradesh: dist. chhindwara, dist. datia, dist. khandwa, dist. ratlam, dist. shivpuri, dist. shahdol, dist. vidisha (11) 1 in maharashtra: dist. gondia, (12) 1 in meghalaya: at tura, dist. west garo hills (13) 1 in mizoram: at village falkawn, dist. aizawl (14) 1 in nagaland: at naga hospital, dist. kohima (15) 5 in odisha: dist. baleswar, at baripada (dist. mayurbhanj), dist. balangir, dist. koraput and dist. puri (16) 1 in punjab: dist. sahibzada ajit singh nagar (mohali) (17) 7 in rajasthan: dist. alwar, dist. barmer, dist. bharatpur, dist. bhilwara, dist. churu, dist. dungarpur, dist. pali (18) 5 in west bengal: at rampurhat (dist. birbhum), dist. cooch behar, at diamond harbor (dist. south 24 parganas), dist. purulia, at raiganj (dist. north dinajpur) (19) 5 in uttar pradesh: dist. faizabad, dist. bahraich, dist. basti, dist. firozabad, dist. shahjahanpur and (20) 1 in uttarakhand: dist. almora. the objective is to establish 58 medical colleges with intake capacity of 100 in each to increase to 5,800 seats at the undergraduate level in government sector. the concerned state governments have been requested to submit detailed project reports (dprs) in this regard. 51 districts have been approved till date. so far, funds to the tune of rs. 15,047.3 million have been released to the state governments for the approved districts under the scheme. as per the mou signed with the states under the scheme, it is for the state governments to provide land for the project and ensure timely completion of works. the ministry has requested the state government of himachal pradesh for early finalization of forest clearance for new medical college at hamirpur.
