indian railways is constructing a traction alternator factory (taf) in dist. vidisha, madhya pradesh. rites, gurgaon, is the consultant. this project is sanctioned in works programme of the ministry of railways at a cost of rs. 600 million. the factory will manufacture 100 units/ yr traction alternator & overhaul of 600 units/ yr traction motors for high horsepower diesel locomotives in-house, which are presently being imported. the traction alternators planned to be manufactured are highly complex machines and would be used in 4500 hp diesel electric locomotives. the indian railways (ir) need about 100 traction alternators motors in a year and most of these are being imported at present. similarly, the requirement of traction motors overhaul for indian railways is about 600 per annum, which is presently being outsourced. foundation stone was laid on 26th may, 2015. civil work is in progress and the project is scheduled for completion in 2017.
