ntpc is planning a 3x800 mw coal-based super critical power plant at village gajamara, dist. dhenkanal, odisha. an mou was signed on 16th december, 2016 between ntpc and national aluminium company (nalco) for developing power projects and other business collaborations in india. under the mou, the companies will float a joint venture company namely, ntpc-nalco power company (nnpc) to set up power plants. both the companies will initiate the efforts on fast track and necessary modalities like the joint venture agreement, power purchase agreement etc. will be finalized by the end of the current financial year. the first such power plant is planned at gajamara, odisha with a capacity of 3x800 mw, at an estimated investment of rs. 140 billion. the power plant with state-of-the-art technology will supply uninterrupted power to nalcos smelter at angul. coal from the mines allocated to nalco shall be linked to the joint venture project at gajmara. this project will supply about 2,400 mw power to meet the captive power requirement of nalco for its proposed rs. 120 billion, 600,000 tpa greenfield aluminium smelter plant at kamakhya nagar, dhenkanal and a rs. 100 billion brownfield expansion of its aluminium smelter at angul, odisha entailing additional capacity of 500,000 tpa. other details shall be furnished when the jv agreement shall be finalized and executed between ntpc and nalco. the process for acquisition of 1,600 acres of land in gajamara has commenced.
