current status : as of december 2016, larsen and toubro has been awarded the contract on 24th november, 2016 to build the new navigational lock at the farakka barrage at an overall contract value of rs. 3,591.9 million. the project is to be implemented under the jal marg vikas project (jmvp) which is being implemented in national waterway-1 (river ganga). 14.86 hectares of land was identified and recommended by iwai for construction of the new navigational lock. land schedule for the said land, along with revisional survey plot numbers, mouza map of land and e-assessment slip, has been prepared by the district administration, murshidabad and the same have been accepted by the farakka barrage project (fbp). according to media reports, the ministry of shipping has appointed sbe belgium as engineering consultant to design the state-of-the-art navigational lock at the barrage. the new lock will also have the technology to be accessible from a control room. the target for completion is more than 30 months.
